Wine hopping along the Aegean

A few nights ago some girls and I went bar hopping along the coast. We started at one bar and when we finished we would walk to the next one. It was really fun to talk, eat and drink with such an amazing view and atmosphere. We stopped at Boulevard 23, then moved next door to Sherlock. We took a brief hiatus from just wine for dinner at Garcon. I had the risotto with mushrooms and it was delicious. After dinner and dessert we finished off our night at Salotto 45. I was watching the sun set on the water with a glass of wine in hand and feeling truly blessed.

Perhaps it is the beautiful backdrops that are so readily available to them but the Greeks know how to slow down and truly enjoy life. Being a college student, I don’t think I take much time to slow down and reflect. There is always something to do or stress about. I hope the new year brings more time for reflection and appreciation for everyone.

Καλημέρα!!! (Kaliméra)

Yesterday was a busy day for me! I spent the day in the gynecology department and then stayed late at the hospital because it was ER day at Papageorgiou. The way it works in Thessaloniki is that each day a different public hospital has their ER open. Papageorgiou does this every 4 days and yesterday was one of them. After that, we all went out to dinner and walked around.

Today, we are planning on shopping around and exploring the city further.

hello! I come to you far less jet lagged than my last post and having completed my first day at Papageorgiou.

a bit about the hospital

Papageorgiou is one of the main public hospitals in Thessaloniki and holds a total of 800 beds. It is run by a board of 7 directors, has 30 clinics and sees about 71,500 patients each year. The department layouts are very similar to the United States with a central nurses station and surrounding rooms. Today, I met with Dr. Rudolf Jobst who is the head of the stroke unit and a senior neurologist at the hospital.  It was the first hospital to use thrombolysis procedure for the treatment of acute ischemic strokes in Greece and is still one of the few centers in the country to offer this treatment. I also had the pleasure of meeting the director of the department Dr. Maria Kotinopoulou. I spent the majority of my day in the emergency clinic of the gynecology department observing and learning about various cases.

what else i did today

After we finished up at the hospital we went on a walk in the city center and spent some time by the sea. We then had lunch/dinner (they call it lunch but its at 5 which is 100% dinner for me) at a seafood restaurant.

i will check back in later
